Accessing Myapps from Windows (Parallels RAS)

Introduction

We recently changed the Myapps virtual app and desktop delivery vendor from Citrix to Parallels RAS.  The functionality is the same and it can be accessed on and off campus without the need for VPN.

If you prefer to access files directly to and from your computer while working in Myapps, we recommend you utilize their client.

Instructions

Web

To access Myapps from Windows via any web browser, navigate to the page myapps.wesleyan.edu.  Enter your username and password then click Sign In. (Two factor authentication will be implemented soon).

You will then see applications and desktops available to you.  You can hover over an item and star it as a favorite, or change sorting and viewing options.

Using Multiple Monitors

If you have and would like to use multiple monitors, you can.  Click on the People icon at the top right of the window and click Settings.  This will open a second browser window and you can arrange them as needed.

Navigate to Displays and check off "Enable Multiple Displays" and press the plus sign on the empty monitor.  Click Save.

NOTE: You will need to allow pop-ups for the site if you are using an ad or pop-up blocker.  Otherwise you will receive an error from Myapps and your browser.

Save and access files from your computer

Web

When accessing Myapps from a web browser, you can only transfer saved files to and from your computer, or saved files in the virtual environment.

If you launched an individual application, you will see icons at the bottom right of your browser window.

If you launched Myapps Desktop, these icons will be on the right side of the window.

Click the icon to save a file from Myapps to your computer.  Click the   icon to upload a file from your computer.

Client

When accessing Myapps from the Parallels Client, you can save and work on files directly to your C drive or any other internal/external drive connected to your computer.  It will show in the virtual environment's File Explorer as a redirected drive/folder.  See the next section in this article to install the client.

If you are trying to access files that are on your local computer's desktop or documents folder, you will need to likely click on the redirected drive named "C on COMPUTERNAME".  The path will vary depending on your computer.  A typical path may be navigating to "C on COMPUTERNAME" - Users - Username of the profile you are signed in as on your local computer - Desktop or Documents.

In this example, the path navigated to shows as this in the address bar of the folder:

If you are using the Parallels client often and will frequently need to navigate to the folder, click in the blank space to the right of the last folder (in this example, to the right of Documents).  The path will turn into an absolute path.  Copy that path as it is.

Then right click on the desktop of Myapps desktop and click New and then click Shortcut

Then paste the path you copied in and click Next.

You can name the shortcut anything you would like

You will now have a shortcut on your Desktop in Myapps to your local computer.

NOTE that if you connect to the Myapps Desktop without using the client or from a different computer, the path will not be found!

Installing Windows Client

NOTE: You will need administrative rights or credentials to proceed.

Download the installer from https://myapps.wesleyan.edu/userportal/download and click the Download button.

Navigate to ClientDownloader.exe and open it.  When prompted for which client to install, choose Install Full Client.

An .msi file will be downloaded and automatically open.  Click Next.

Check off the EULA box and click Next.

Choose the install location (the default location is fine for most users) and click Next.

Choose whether to create shortcuts then click Next.

Click the radio button next to "Do not allow shadowing" and click Next.

Click the radio button next to "Do not install Single Sign-On component" and click Next.  (This is a different Single Sign-On component and not related to Wesleyan's).

Click Install and allow the .msi to make changes to your computer.  You may need to enter an administrator's password.

At the last installation window, leave "Launch Parallels Client" checked off and click Finish.

A dialog window will open and ask if you would like to add a RAS connection, click Yes.

Enter myapps.wesleyan.edu as the server address and click Next.

Leave the connection mode as Gateway SSL Mode.  You can change the Friendly name to anything you would like.  Click Create.

Leave authentication type as Credentials.  Enter your username and password.  Only check off Save Password if you are using your own computer.  Click Connect.

If you are asked to allow the site to open tuxclient links or of the associated app, you can check off Always allow and then Open Parallels Client/Open Link (your browser window may vary slightly).

Troubleshooting

Client won't reconnect

When using the Parallels client on Windows and you click the Reconnect button and nothing happens, you will need to close the client completely.  It does not completely exit when you close the main window.  Click on the caret ^ at the bottom right of your screen in the system notification area and right click on the Parallels icon and choose Exit.

403 Forbidden

If you get a "403 Forbidden" error page or similar, we may need you to collect logs for our vendor to analyze.  Please see KB0011720 for more detail.

NVIDIA License Acquired Nvidia Virtual Applications license acquired expiring at GMT

When you open an individual application you may see this pop up in the upper right corner.  You can safely close it.  It is a notification that the GPU is licensed properly and it will renew on its own.  ITS is looking into hiding this notification with the service provider.
