Streaming Digital Video Content in Classrooms

As we have installed streaming devices such as AppleTVs and Microsoft Wireless Display Adapters in classrooms, many people wish to use them to stream digital video content from their devices. This includes Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, Max, and other streaming platforms. When users subscribe to any of these services, they accept their end user license agreements, which specify they are for individual use.

As a result, users will likely find that they are unable to stream digital video content from their devices via streaming devices in classrooms and meetings rooms across campus. We recommend that users wishing to share digital video content in an educational setting either use the computer in the space or connect their laptop directly to the projection via a cable. ITS will not install apps to stream digital video content on any of its classroom or meeting room hardware, including but not limited to computers and streaming devices.

Please do be advised: showing digital video content and charging for admission is a clear violation of the user agreement and is illegal.

Additionally, as commercial providers of digital video content license their content to individuals, but not to institutions, this makes that content unavailable for institutions to purchase. Wesleyan is not able to purchase institutional licenses to streaming platforms. When possible, Wesleyan Libraries will attempt to purchase streaming access for digital video content through a vendor for a limited time. Please consult the Libraries' policy webpage for information about digitization. Information on how to request an item for purchase from the Libraries is available here.

We encourage all members of the Wesleyan community interested in learning more about digital rights management to begin by consulting the Library's guide to Copyright and Intellectual Property.
