Downloading and Installing Microsoft Teams on your Devices

Introduction

The Microsoft Teams application is available for download on computers (Windows, Mac) and mobile devices (iOS and Android). The installer can be located on Microsoft's website, your self-service portal on Wesleyan issued computers, or on your mobile device's app store. On Wesleyan issued computers (Windows and Mac), the capital image does not come with Microsoft Teams by default. The application will need to be installed when you set up your computer.

NOTE: On Windows 11, you will notice there is a version of Microsoft Teams pre-installed on your computer (the "T" icon has inverted colors). However it is only meant for personal Microsoft accounts.

If you try to sign in using your Wesleyan issued Microsoft account, it will prompt you to use a personal account instead.

If you are using a Wesleyan issued computer, you should uninstall the "personal" version to avoid confusion. The quickest way to do this is to locate the application in your Start Menu, right-click, and click Uninstall.

Instructions

The instructions in this article will show you how to install the New Microsoft Teams. To familiarize yourself with some of the new features, please review this knowledge article, this article, or this infographic.

Installing on your Computer (Windows and Mac)

On Windows and Mac, you can either install Microsoft Teams from Microsoft's Website or install from a Self-Service portal if you're using a Wesleyan issued computer.

Before You Begin (Windows 11)

  • On Windows 11, ensure you uninstall the personal version of Microsoft Teams (the "T" icon has inverted colors) to avoid confusion.

  • Prior to installing on Windows, you'll need to ensure that App Installer is installed on your computer. It can be found on the Microsoft App Store.

Installing From Microsoft’s Website

1) In a web browser, Navigate to the following site: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-teams/download-app

2) Click Download App for Desktop or simply scroll down.

You'll then need to initiate the download for Microsoft Teams:

  • On Windows (left): Under the Work or School section, click Download the new Teams app. Ensure you select the version appropriate for your operating system (Windows 64 Bit is common).
  • On Mac (right): Click Download New Teams.

4) Locate the installer for Microsoft Teams. It will be saved to where your web browser is set to save your downloads (typically the Downloads folder).

  • On Windows (left), it will be an .asix file
  • On Mac (right), it will be a .pkg file

5) Run the installer. Follow any prompts during the installation.

NOTE: As the installation completes on Mac, you may need to allow some permissions in order to run Teams (ex: allowing for notifications, use of Microphone, Bluetooth, Location, etc.).

6) When the installation completes, you will need to sign into and configure Teams. The Teams application will be available in your Start Menu on Windows or the Applications folder on Mac.

You can then proceed to sign into and configure Microsoft Teams.

Installing from Software Portal

The New Microsoft Teams is also available on your Software Center on Windows and Self-Service on Mac. More information on Self-Service can be found here.

You will need to locate the Microsoft Teams application and then click install.

Like in the above section, the Teams application will be available in your Start Menu or your Applications Folder following installation.

You can then proceed to sign into and configure Microsoft Teams.

Installing on your Mobile Device

The Teams app is available for both iOS and Android.

1) You will need to go to your device's app store to locate and download the app to your device. This can be done one of two ways.

  • Going to the Teams Download Page , scrolling down to Get the Teams mobile app, and scanning the QR code. This should automatically bring you to your device's app store (App Store if you're on iOS, or Google Play if you are using Android).
  • Going to your device's app store (either App Store on iOS or Play Store on Android), searching for Microsoft Teams, and locating the app.

2) The first time you launch, you may need to allow certain permissions specific to your device (ex: use of Microphone, Camera, Location, etc.). A sample of permissions for both iOS and Android devices are listed below.

Once your permissions are granted, you will need to sign into and configure Teams on your mobile device.

Signing into and Configuring Teams

1) When the installation completes, you will need to sign into and configure Teams. The procedure should be similar on your computer or mobile device.

  • If you are on a Wesleyan issued Windows computer, your account should automatically be detected. Click on your Wesleyan email address to sign in.
  • If you've signed into another Microsoft 365 product previously (ex: Outlook), your account should also appear on the list. Like above, click on your Wesleyan account to sign in.
  • If you do not see your account, click Create or use another account. Enter your full Wesleyan email address when prompted.

2) After entering your Wesleyan email address, you will then get a pop up with Wesleyan's single sign on. Enter your SSO credentials. Authenticate with Duo when prompted.

3) You will be able to use Microsoft Teams. When you first sign in, by default, it will default to your Teams tab. If you've been added to a couple of Teams, your teams will automatically show up in the list.

If you want to access the chat function (commonly used), then click on the chat button towards the left side.

Setting Your Audio/Video Devices

If you are using Teams on your computer, it is recommended that you check your devices (audio and video) prior to using Teams for the first time. To access your devices menu, click on the ellipsis (...) button towards the top right corner of your window, and then click Settings.

Once in Settings, go to devices.

You should then be able to select the audio device(s) you want to use by going to the individual drop-downs for Speaker and Microphone. Teams also has a feature where you can easily switch between your computer's built-in microphone and speakers, and other audio devices connected to your computer (for example, a USB or Bluetooth headset if you have them connected). Once you verify your audio device selections, click the Make a test call button so you can verify that your audio devices work.

If you are using a Headset, by default, the device that will play notification sounds and ringtones will be your headset. It is recommended that you set your secondary ringer to a set of speakers (ex: your computer's built in speakers or if you have an external set connected) so you can hear notifications for calls/messages.

You will also need to ensure you have the correct webcam selected. If you are using a laptop, by default, it will default to your computer's built in webcam. If you are using an external camera (ex: if you are using a laptop with the lid down, or if you are using a higher quality camera), you will need to ensure you have your external camera selected.

Verifying Device Permissions

If you are unable to utilize your microphone, camera, or screenshare, it is possible that you may need to check your device permissions.

Mac

Go to System Settings > Security and Privacy. You will need to enable Microsoft Teams to utilize the Microphone and Camera, as well as grant permission for Screen Recording.

If you have Teams already running, you may be prompted to quit and reopen Teams upon changing these settings. Click Quit & Reopen to relaunch Teams.

Mobile Devices (iOS and Android)

Go to your device's Settings menu, and locate the Teams Application. You'll need to ensure the application is set to access the device's Microphone, Camera, etc.

    • On iOS (left), go to Settings, locate Teams, and ensure the necessary permissions are enabled.
    • On Android (right), go to Settings > Apps > Teams, and ensure the necessary permissions are enabled.

Setting Links to Open in Default Browser

By Default, Microsoft Teams is set to open links in Microsoft Edge as opposed to your computer's default web browser. There is a setting that will need to be changed.

Go to Settings > Files and Links > Links open preference. On the dropdown to the right, ensure that Default browser is selected.
